Quang Ngai: Fake ambulance found transporting timber
On January 19, Tra Bong District Police team stopped a man driving what was later discovered to be a decommissioned ambulance carrying eleven pieces of rare timber. The man had bought the vehicle in order to transport timber to sell in Tra Bong District.

Bac Can: 15 Langur skeletons found coaches
On January 19-20, the Bac Can Market Management Branch co-operated with the Economic Crime Investigation and Bac Can Traffic Police teams to confiscate 15 skeletons believed to be langurs being transported on two coaches. Authorities are currently confirming whether they are in fact langur skeletons.

Hanoi: Crimes against wildlife abound
On January 19, Environmental Police team caught a man transporting 14 common barn owls (Tyto alba). The man was on his way to sell the owls to an acquaintance. On the same day, three other people were caught trading four king cobras (Ophiophagus Hannah), four Indochinese rat snakes (Ptyas korros) and four radiated rat snakes (Elaphe radiate). The following day, another two live king cobras (Ophiophagus Hannah) were discovered at a coffee shop. Local authorities also confiscated a pygmy loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) being transported on Hoang Hoa Tham Street on the same day.

Bac Lieu: Millions of swallows and mascarene swiftlets appear
The recent arrival of millions of swallows (Apus apus) and mascarene swiftlets (Collocalia germaini) in Bac Lieu Province has attracted the attention of many locals. Many believe the appearance of so many wild birds in the area indicates that the environment is improving.

Phu Yen: Macaques transferred to Rescue Center
After the Soc Son Rescue Center confirmed their willingness to adopt 96 macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that had been sold to a farmer in Dong Hoa District, Phu Yen Province, 89 macaques were transferred to the centre on January 19. Seven macaques had already died due to bad health and fighting before they could be transferred. The farmer that had bought the macaques voluntarily transferred the animals to the Tuy Hoa District FPD after public concerns were raised following an article published on the website www.thanhnien.com.vn about the sale of the macaques.

Quang Binh: Forest needs protecting
According to the Forest Inventory and Planning Institute (FIPI), there is a great need to protect the Khe Net Forest in Tuyen Hoa District, Quang Binh Province, through establishing a Natural Reserve. Wildlife found in the area include Asiatic black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus), giant muntjac (Megamuntiacus vuquangensis), and Asian golden cat (Catopuma temminckii).

Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Field Skills Development Training Course
The Asian Turtle Conservation Program (ATP) of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, in cooperation with Cuc Phuong National Park’s Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) will be hosting its sixth annual field skills training course focused on research and conservation of tortoises and freshwater turtles. The course will be held from March 13th – 20th 2010. Scholarships will be offered covering training and accommodation costs for ten university students and young conservation professionals.

Small Grants Opportunity
Surveys for Priority Populations of Vietnam’s Threatened Gibbons
Fauna & Flora International (FFI) are co-operating with Conservation International (CI) on a project to determine the current state, distribution, and knowledge on gibbons in Vietnam. The project will intensify existing efforts while establishing a standardized and systematic approach to surveys. As part of this project small grants will be available to individuals or organization wishing to conduct gibbon survey in Vietnam on priority gibbon populations. The small grants scheme funded by the Arcus Foundation aims to obtain the most up-to-date information for the forthcoming revision of the Vietnam Primate Conservation Status Review for Gibbons.
